Minimam: Silkscreen Pattern
This circular pattern was inspired by the partnership between Akiko Ida and Pierre Javelle who together create amusing food photographs of a miniature world of gourmandise. I was fascinating by the ease with which their two contrasting personalities and worlds merge in the process of creating their “minimams”. There is a story being told in each photograph and it was important for me to capture all of this in my pattern.
I feel like the pattern I chose displays this through the contrast between the thin black lines and the thicker planes they form as they collide. The increasingly larger masses from the center going outward underline a narrative – much like a story being told. Moreover, one of my favorite aspects about this pattern is the undulating edge which accentuates the overall organic quality of the pattern. This particular silkscreen print was created at a later stage with a clogged stencil, but it is the resulting texture from those imperfections that I was drawn towards
