My Travel journal: Coffee & Ink
This journal recounts my fictional journey to a fictional utopian world, where the women are tall beautiful giants, the pets are elephants and the men are tiny unfortunate-looking people. I created it from scratch using Japanese bookbinding and Kenyan Kikoy fabric for the cover. It is one of those amazingly fun projects where you get to experiment freely as an illustrator by playing with proportions, mediums and techniques.
I illustrated my imaginary travels using solely black ink, coffee and collage. The journal starts and ends with a self-caricature of a curly haired girl sitting by a plane window, which serves as a before and after transformation. My self-discovery journey allows me to grow as a character and emerge from the experience prosperous, pampered and well rested. I may not have realized it at first but I was unconsciously influenced by my own travels and experience of living in Kenya – a time which was particularly fulfilling on a personal level.
