David Carson: Poster Design
David Carson is a legend in the world of graphic design, mostly known for his experimental grunge typography. It was therefore only natural that typography would take center stage in this poster meant as an homage to his work. He inspired me to closely examine, manipulate and play with Arabic typography. This allowed me to look at this alphabet I am so familiar with in a whole new light. After hours of observation and countless experimentations I was able to extract from the Arabic script forms that resemble letters found in the Latin script. I then proceeded to render each letter of his name with an Arabic letterform. For example, the letter "i" in David is actually and Arabic "z" and the “s” in Carson is an Arabic “k”. As for the choice of blue as the prominent color, it was a nod to his well-documented passion for surfing.
